Making Your Quirks Work

As a child, people would always ask me about the dot in the middle of my cheek. I struggled with self esteem as I tried to work around a large mole on my face, but over time, I learned how to make it work. Believe it or not, my mole has actually become the focal point of my modeling career. Critics have said that it gives my look a little personality. It isn't always easy to feel beautiful, especially if something about you is different. I decided to create a beauty blog dedicated to helping others learn how to make their quirks work for them.

3 Tips For Making A Splash With A Winter Cocktail Dress

by Derek Little

The winter season is full of reasons to party. And if you're going to be attending parties, then you need to have the right dresses for the occasion. A cocktail dress is a versatile part of your wardrobe that works for a great number of different occasions. But choosing the right cocktail dress for winter functions is often more difficult than choosing one for warm weather functions – your dress needs to be flattering and eye-catching while still providing you with some protection from the cold. What colors work best for the winter? What styles are comfortable in the cold? How can you best accessorize your dress for the season? Take a look at some tips for choosing and wearing a winter cocktail dress.

Winter Colors

Traditionally, winter colors are bold and bright. Snow white, fire engine red, and classic black are always appropriate colors for a winter cocktail dress. But if you're looking for something a little more distinctive, the color palette for winter 2015/2016 fashions offers some interesting options.

If cool colors suit your complexion best, teal shades are trendy for the season. You'll look smashing in a velvety teal minidress or a shiny, flowing teal gown. Are warm colors more your style? Try bringing a little sunshine to the winter festivities with a dark yellow oak shade. You'll certainly stand out from the crowd, and you'll appear to be carrying a little summer warmth into any room you walk into. Do you prefer more neutral colors? This season's neutrals include a gray that's reminiscent of a stormy winter sky or a metallic silver that will blend in perfectly with the various holiday decorations.

Winter Styles

Spaghetti straps and sleeveless and backless dresses are sexy in the summertime, but there's nothing attractive about goosebumps. You need to find dresses that will accentuate your most positive features without leaving you shivering in the cold.

If your shapely legs are your best feature, you can still choose a minidress, but consider pairing it with brightly colored or patterned tights instead of thin pantyhose. Tights are made of thicker and more winter-friendly material, and they can look chic and edgy if you choose the right pair. Think solid teal tights with a silver dress for a mermaid-like effect, or checked pattern tights under a white dress for a look that's stylish but not too formal. If you'd rather cover your legs and show off your top half, opt for a maxidress with lace or mesh sleeves, shoulders, or back. This will draw attention to your upper body the same way that a sleeveless or backless dress would, but can provide you with enough coverage to keep you from shivering.

Winter Accessories

Diamonds are a girl's best friend, but their icy charms can be a little cold for the summer time. However, they perfectly accompany almost any shade and style of dress in the winter. Pair them with other cool weather gems like garnets and sapphires to liven up a plain white, black, or gray dress, or wear them alone with trendy colored dresses to add sparkle to your ensemble without distracting from your dress.

If you're opting for a higher than average neckline because of the winter weather, skip the pendant necklaces and opt for a metallic choker or collar instead. Choose a plain flat collar in silver or gold if your dress is patterned or complicated. It will give you some glitz without going over the top. If you're wearing basic black, go for something big and chunky with a mosaic or tribal pattern to bring some complexity to your look. Top things off with a pair of icicle shaped earrings and an updo to show them off.

Finding and accessorizing a dress that looks perfect on you while accommodating the winter weather may be a little more difficult than slipping into a skimpy little black dress on a balmy summer evening. However, your extra work can definitely pay off with a stunning look.
